VÄVA is the world’s first life-sized living hinge hammock of its kind. This chair celebrates the old and the new and encapsulates the values and surroundings of the Fortitude Valley State Secondary College for which it was built. The vision was to create an innovative relationship between steel and timber with the steel symbolising the construction and framework of the Story Bridge which can be seen from the School. The hammock shape was chosen to mirror the bridge’s silhouette and also the School’s Crest.

With the theme of inside/outside, this chair has been fabricated using a durable black powder-coated steel structure and AC Grade Hoop Pine laser cut Plywood finished with a gorgeous coat of Danish Oil. Normally structural elements of a chair are kept hidden from view, VÄVA has been flipped inside out with the steel structure becoming a focal point. The design of the plywood celebrates old and new elements, mimicking the school fence detail. By using the living hinge design in an unprecedented way we change the way people think about materiality just as the school changes the way we educate.

This chair has been made specifically for the Innovation Hub/Centre at Fortitude Valley State Secondary College but its versatility means it could be used anywhere through-out the school. VÄVA has been designed to encourage exploration and playful thinking, quiet study, creativity and relaxation for both students and teachers in an outstanding state-of-the-art environment.
